#REDTip 3 – Designing from a Distance

During a time like this where the MOST important thing is to stay safe, healthy and to flatten the curve – we all need to modify how we work. Working at 6 in the morning or 9 at night has become a new standard for families, so we can be teachers to our children as well as caregivers. Designing from afar although more difficult is now what we, as designers, have to do.

Having successfully designed & overseen projects all over the country, much of my design and management experience comes from working remotely. These include projects where I only saw the jobsite once, used non-digital pictures, outdated plans, architects who missed measurements, and in many cases, a wall or room on the plans that was not even there.

Utilizing technology and relationships built with the client and the people on the job site, I made sure to concisely and clearly communicate the design vision and plan of attack up front. But I also made sure we did daily video walk-throughs of job sites and catch-ups with clients to address progress and concerns.

All of these steps helped me to empower myself as a designer and implement my clients’ design and construction vision.

During these tough times, it is even more difficult to conduct in person design consultations and jobsite walk-throughs. Plans are more difficult to vet. Relationships are harder to cultivate.

Through my decade long experience conducting much of the design process remotely, I am able to build that rapport with my clients and overcome today’s challenges.

Use of apps, pictures, video conferencing and file sharing allow me to design and communicate with my clients from a safe distance. Ensuring that my clients’ projects are not put on hold during this time.

#REDTIP 3 – Now is the perfect time to start designing your renovation. Whether you are planning a large renovation, modifying your existing office space to make your employees feel more comfortable when they come back to work or creating a home office.
